Safety-Related Instrumentation and Control System For Nuclear Power Plants
The systems which perform the vitai functions of monitoring and controlling systems and parameters at nuclear power plants are known as instrumentation and control (I&C) systems*. They are divided into two types: information systems and control systems. Both types operate by providing signals from measuring equipment.
Information systems monitor plant parameters and systems; they display and annunciate data concerning the status of these parameters and systems during normal operation, anticipated operational occurrences and accident conditions. Selected data are recorded for short- or long-term storage. '
Control systems maintain plant parameters within specified limits of operational states or initiate changes in plant parameters in order to return those parameters to within specified limits. They can be used to change the status of plant equipment by switching pumps, opening or closing valves, moving control rods, etc., either automatically or through manual intervention.
