This Safety Guide presents the safety principles and the approach underlying the design of nuclear pow er plants and identifies the relationship between the Code of Practice on Design for Safety of Nuclear Power Plants (IAEA Safety Series 50-C-D, hereafter referred to as the Code) and other Guides in the design. area of the NUSS Programme. It should be read as an elaboration of the safety principles which are summarized in Section 1.3 of the Code.

Since the G uide has been prepared subsequent to publication of a num ber of the other Safety Guides on design, reference will be made to the applicable Safety Guide where possible. The safety approach presented here is intended to provide a concise account of the basic principles on which the design requirem ents are built. It should also be noted th a t the safety approach and provisions in the design have to be integrated into quality assurance programmes for all phases of the establishm ent o f the plant and into the operation throughout the life of the plant.
