INVESTIGATION OF INTERNAL PIPELINE CONDITION USING INDUSTRIAL GAMMA COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT) SYSTEM | Prosiding SKN 2019
Pipeline is an important part in industry that functions to transport fluids. During the process, pipeline may contain deposits which can cause scale. Pipe scale is a problem that can disrupt the fluid flow rate that affects the production process and has high potential hazard. Industrial gamma computed tomography (CT) system has been designed to investigate thickness or the profile of scale inside the pipeline. By using 137Cs (2.96 GBq) as the gamma transmitter and NaI(Tl) scintillation detector as the receiver, the system is able to visualize the internal structure of an object. In this research, a pipe with artificial scale was used as an object (OD= 168 mm, ID= 154 mm, and scale thickness= 18 mm). The object was scanned in translation and rotation. The translational scan step is every 3 mm. While the rotational scan was performed every 2.810 (64 projections). The data were reconstructed to image using filtered back projection (FPB) algorithm. The reconstructed image is able to show pipe wall, pipe scale, and the void with resolution of 3 mm each pixel. Based on image’s pixels measurement, OD= 55 pixels (165 mm), ID= 50 pixels (150 mm), and scale thickness= 6 pixels (18 mm).
