Characterization of neutron-activated radionuclides in the biological shield of the TRIGA 2000 reactor using PHITS 3.34
The TRIGA 2000 research reactor in Bandung has been in operation for over 4 decades and is now entering the preparatory phase of decommissioning. A key requirement of this phase is the thorough characterization of neutron-induced activation in primary structural materials, particularly the concrete biological shield surrounding experimental facilities. This study evaluates the spatial distribution of neutron flux and the corresponding generation of activation products in the biological shield using the PHITS 3.34 Monte Carlo transport code coupled with the DCHAIN-SP activation module. The shielding region—including the thermal column, thermalizing column, and four beam ports—was discretized into 132 segments of 25 × 25 cm to enable spatially resolved inventory analysis. Neutron fluxes were tallied using the t-track estimator, while radionuclide inventories were calculated using t-dchain with JENDL-4.0 nuclear data. The highest neutron fluxes were observed in segments adjacent to the radial-piercing and radial-1 beam ports. Eight radionuclides were identified as the primary long-term contributors to shielding activity: Mn-54, Fe-55, Co-60, Eu-152, Eu-154, Ba-133, Ca-41, and Ca-45. These findings provide essential radiological information for waste classification, decay-storage planning, and the formulation of a safe decommissioning strategy.
